Bio Brief

I am a professor with teaching and research responsibilities in the area of environmental/natural resources conservation engineering. My research focuses on the use of vegetated systems for the mitigation of non-point source pollution and the remediation of contaminated soil and water. I am currently working to develop design criteria for sustainable urban stormwater runoff systems and assessing the impact of riparian buffers for improving water quality on military maneuver grounds. I have considerable experience with phytoremediation, the use of green plants to clean polluted water and soil, of organic contaminants. Prior to joining the faculty at Kansas State University in August 2000, I worked for the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Ecosystem Research Division in Athens, GA. While with the U.S. EPA I worked as part of a multidisciplinary team on phytoprocesses in support of multimedia modeling efforts for assessing risks from chemicals to human health and the environment.
