K-State competed against the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Iowa State University and Oklahoma State University. Each team was provided with a 1000-L reservoir,
up to 30 m of various sizes PVC pipe, and access to 14-amp, 120-volt AC electrical service to power their pump systems. Teams arrived at competition with a fountain design, along with the necessary pump systems, PVC couplers, fittings, valves, and nozzles. After a brief, marketing-style promotion of their design, teams had a 120-minute period to construct their fountains. After completion, each fountain was tested for its ability to: (1) complete two technical tasks, and (2) make an aesthetic display. Awards were based on separate scores of the written design, oral presentation, construction, technical tests and aesthetics. K-State Fountain Wars Team members agree they had an awesome learning experience with their project and are looking forward to next year’s competition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania!
