Welcome From the Department Head

Photo of Mark WilkinsIt is my pleasure to welcome you to the Carl and Melinda Helwig Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering. Since 1913, our department has embodied the essence of the land-grant university mission by combining agriculture and engineering, the two areas proscribed by the Morrill Act to be taught at land-grant universities, to develop solutions to provide food, energy and water in a sustainable manner.

We offer bachelor’s degrees in biological systems engineering, environmental engineering and agricultural technology management, as well as a master’s and doctorate in biological and agricultural engineering. Our graduates are leaders in the agricultural equipment, precision agriculture, environmental engineering, and food and bioprocessing industries. We seek students who want to make an impact through developing sustainable solutions for the world’s grand challenges of providing more food, energy and water to a growing population.

Our department has active research and extension programs through its partnership with K-State Research and Extension. Faculty, research staff and graduate students actively pursue research in environmental quality, bioprocessing, mechatronics and precision agriculture. Our extension efforts educate the public on irrigation management, water quality, watershed management and restoration, and precision agriculture.

We welcome current students, potential students, alumni and friends to engage with us as we develop engineering solutions for a sustainable future. Please stop by our office in 1016 Seaton Hall or call or email us to let us know how we can be of service to you.

Go ‘Cats!
